Indie Beauty Expo is reflective of the times we live in. Green beauty has evolved and elevated the standards of what consumers want from brands big and small. Natural beauty is no longer just for spa seekers, toxic-free beauties and those in the know. This has been my second year attending the Indie Beauty Expo. One can certainly feel the intoxicating energy and excitement for clean living. When I started writing about wellness and green beauty in 2006, the options were limited and not as attractive. We have come a long way. In the last few years, the industry has sped up the process and we woke up to indie beauty being trendy.
My personal beauty journey has evolved as well, arming me with the tools need for seeking out the best chemical-free products out there. Over the years, I have gone from blogger, to Online Editor for the Organic Spa Magazine, to helping my mentor, Mary Bemis, launch Insider’s Guide to Spas. I have judged the best beauty and wellness brands at the NY NOW Expo for three years, tried many spa treatments, interviewed experts, dipped my toe into social media expertise and learned to whip up some family recipes of DIY beauty products of my own. If it was not for my role model, Mary Bemis (who is a true indie beauty pioneer and curator of the first ever green beauty section for Cosmoprof), my life in the beauty industry might look slightly different.
My take-away from Indie Beauty Expo is that there is solidarity in beauty. The industry is capable of improving lives (especially for women) and creates successful CEOs. Genuine friendships and collaborations are favored among this crowd and although there are too many new and old brands to list, these are my top 12 favorite discoveries.
