Wintertime is the best time for masking. Whether you do it while multi-tasking or make it into a me-time ritual, masking is still one of the best, and popular, ways to improve your skin and your mood. As a wellness and mental health awareness advocate it is important to mention that natural mood boosters (such as the power of skincare or getting outside) can help elevate your day from bad to better, however it should never be equated with professional help. Self-care can mean many different things to many different individuals. Masking can be a small victory that allows us to feel better about the way we look on the outside. Doing it correctly feels even better.
Start multi-masking like a professional with a facial steam. This allows your pores to open up. For help with steaming “how-to”, read Face Steaming 101. Paying attention to what different zones of your face need is an aesthetician’s trick to beautiful and healthy looking skin. It is okay to use different masks on different parts of the face in order to get the results you desire. Let’s get going.
Oily Skin & Breakouts: Typically around the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin area)
A clay mask is one of the most effective masks to use after a facial steam. The T-zone is typically the area that requires a mask with the ability to purify, reduce oil and minimize pores. Even those with dry skin should not underestimate the power of a clay mask. The trick with a clay mask is to not allow it to dry completely. A dry clay mask can dehydrate your skin. Try Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask. It’s my go-to on Sunday nights for skin that is beautiful and smooth all week long.
Dry & Flaky Skin
Dry skin can happen on any parts of the face. If your dry skin goes untreated it can cause further skin problems and aging. I have extremely dry skin and I am a moisturizing fanatic. There are certain parts of the face that get more dehydrated than others. For me, very dry and flaky skin happens around my mouth and the jawline. I pay close attention to this area with leave-on masks, but in addition, treat my whole face to a hydrating mask without skipping zones. I occasionally do this after the clay mask. One of my favorite new skincare finds is OZNaturals Vitamin C + Sea Hydration Mask. Not only does it help get rid of the flakiness and developing fine lines, this mask contains Vitamin C, which brightens skin without irritating it.
Rough Texture, Lines & Dehydrated Skin
For further help with wrinkles, lines, texture and dehydrated skin, the trick is to use a leave on mask that acts as a moisturizer. My favorite way to wake up to soft and hydrated skin is with a Herbal Dynamics Hyaluronic Acid & Oat Overnight Recovery Mask. I keep it near my bed and whenever I use it, my skin just feels taken care of. For daytime, try Saian’s Amino-Lift Leave-On Mask. Saian is a clinical and natural skincare line that knows professional beauty. It’s skincare gold. Saian products are made to work in a spa environment so I trust them to bring those same results home. This mask adds an extra plump to my skin, improving overall elasticity over time. I am beyond grateful to have found them.
Dull & Tired Looking Skin (especially on the apple of your cheeks)
For areas of your face that need brighting and resurfacing, try a mask that leaves your skin looking radiant and glowing. The area around your eyes and on the apples of your cheeks typically requires extra help in standing out. These are the parts of your face that suffer the most when you feel less than rested. Try Circcell’s Fruition Brightening & Polishing Mask. It is gentle on sensitive skin but treats you to powerful rejuvenation. Circcell is one of those brands that will help you feel like you just stepped out of a luxury spa treatment. It’s refreshing.
Flaky & Thinning Lips
When we think of masking, we don’t automatically think lips. I say they should not be ignored. This is especially true during the wintertime. For flaky and thinning lips, I swear by Herbal Dynamics Volumizing Lip Scrub & Mask Duo. The scrub is perfect for including in your daytime or nighttime beauty ritual. This duo is ideal for natural beauty gals who enjoy smooth lips, plus a bit of plump, without the needles.
